Hunger Games Slum For Sale

By now there’s no way you haven’t heard of the latest blockbuster to hit the theater “The Hunger Games” unless you’ve been living under a rock that is. The abandoned mill town where the heroine of the movie lived in is part of a 72-acre parcel which the owner hopes will sell now for $1.4 million. This slum that’s about 60 miles northwest of Charlotte has been for sale for several years, but is now getting so much more attention. The Salt Lake moving specialists learned that the abandoned mill town has 20 vacant houses and a general store. The owner says he’s tried selling it for two years and a half with the price tag of $400,000 but was unsuccessful. He now hopes a fan will snag the place and take good care of it. The local Salt Lake City movers learned that the Henry River Mill Village was also used as a stand-in for District 12, another movie where it was the home of Katniss, the heroine of the film. Henry River Mill Village was home to a cotton mill in 1905, a general store, a boarding house and 35 homes for mill workers and their families. It closed down in the late 60s or early 70s and burned down in 1977. The last resident moved out in the 80s. These days, the owner is trying to protect the place for “Hunger Games” fans.

Home Buyers Prefer Smaller Homes

According to the Urban Land Institute, today’s homebuyer wants a smaller home in an urban area, in addition to a shorter commute and of course smaller payments. In their report called “What’s Next? Real Estate in the New Economy”, the Urban Land Institute says more and more Americans wish to live next to restaurants, shops and services. The local Salt Lake City movers learned this statement resonates even more with Generation Y and baby boomers. The Generation Y rather choose an urban location over space. Since they have lower incomes, this demographic is always looking for cheaper rent or lower mortgage payments. The Urban Land Institute also found that larger houses and bigger apartments will be more for intergenerational families, where aging parents are living with their children. The local Salt Lake City moving specialists learned that more Americans will be renting, either by choice or necessity.

Home Sales Go Up By 8.8%

The Salt Lake City moving specialists uncovered the latest news surrounding the real estate market in the U.S.in the month of February. According to the National Association of Realtors, home sales have increased this past February compared to last year during that same month. This marked the highest level of sales in February for the last five years. The Salt Lake City movers learned that the real estate market is “off to its fastest start” since 2007. Plus, according to the Commerce Department more building permits for new homes were issued in February 2012 than any other month since October 2008. Some people are saying that this upward real estate trend is due to the milder winter of 2012 but not everyone agrees that weather had anything to do with the numbers. The Salt Lake City moving specialists learned that for the first time since November 2010, the average price for an existing home showed year-over year increase. Inventory also increased from January to February with 2.43 million unsold homes on the market compared to July 2007′s 4.04 million unsold homes.

New Home Improvement

Are you moving in Salt Lake City to a new home? Much of the time the home is only new to the person taking occupancy. Moving into a previously-lived-in home, you will undoubtedly run into wear and tear around the house. If you have purchased this new home, odds are it is in pretty decent shape, but there is always room for improvement. I would like to offer some food-for-thought that will hopefully inspire those soon to move into a new-to-you home. A little bit of effort goes a long way, and may inspire you to start other home-improvement projects as well. Before your Salt Lake City mover arrives to deliver your furniture, consider the following simple improvements for your new home:

  • Doors and windows are an excellent starting point. Think about how often you open and close your doors and windows. Over time, these access points do succumb to wear and tear. Replacing the weather stripping along door and window frames is a smart and easy fix as this improves the appearance of your home, and the efficiency of your air conditioning and heating appliances. This should be pretty self explanatory and also very simple to do. As for any hinged doorways; over time a squeak is likely to develop as moisture can cause rust, and friction can cause an accumulation of tiny metal shavings inside the hinges. It is best to remove hinge pins so that the door can be removed and the hinge components cleaned out and lubricated. Any petroleum based lubricant such as WD-40 will work well. Take this opportunity to tighten the mounting hardware on each hinge as these become loose over time. Tightening the hinge screws should fix most stuck doors also. You may want to use sand paper to file down the top and/or sides of any doors which stick even after the hinges have been fixed. Also, survey each doorway in need of new door stoppers. Avoiding doorknob holes in your wall is one way to keep your new home nice!
  • Light switch and power outlet plate replacement is also a simple effective fix for your new home. If these plates are in need of replacement, you may even choose to upgrade all of them to a different style/color. There are many different styles of switch and outlet plates to choose from, you’ll surely find a style that grabs your attention. While you are in the process of removing your old plates, take this opportunity to insulate behind plates on the exterior walls of your home. Energy efficiency repairs are very advantageous and are often simple fixes.
  • The walls of your new home may be in need of some quick fixes. If the previous owners of your home hung pictures, there may be several nail holes in your walls. These are simple to repair, just apply a small wad of putty into each nail hole and smooth it out with a knife. A fresh coat of new paint doesn’t hurt either after your nail holes have been filled. If you notice pealing wallpaper, there is a much quicker fix than fully replacing it. Simply spread a liberal amount of paste on both sides of a note card or sheet of paper. Place the paper applicator between the wall and the wallpaper, and flatten the pealed wallpaper against the pasted paper so that the glue is applied evenly. Then slide the applicator back out from between the wall and wallpaper. Pat down the wallpaper one more time to make extra sure that the paste is well applied and then use a damp cloth to clean any excess paste that may have squeezed out from under the wallpaper.

There are plenty of simple inexpensive repairs you can perform on your new home. The better your new home looks, the more excited you’ll be about having your Salt Lake City movers finally deliver your furniture on your moving day. Be sure to hire a reputable Salt Lake City mover so that the walls floors and doors of your newly spruced up home remain in good shape.

Things to do in Salt Lake City

I spent the better part of my undergraduate years in the Salt Lake City area. There’s a lot to do and see in Salt Lake. Moving to Salt Lake? If you’re an outdoorsman, you have the Wasatch Front right on your doorstep. If you’re more of a city slicker, Salt Lake City has a lot to offer for urbanites too. I thought I’d distill Salt Lake City down to the essentials. These are places I would gladly go again if I ever head back that way, and that I think shouldn’t be missed by newcomers.

They’re in no particular order, and feel free to skip any of them if you’re not into the same things I am. Click here to learn more.
