New Frontier at Sundance, a program launched by Sundance Institute in 2007 to spotlight innovative artists, is shedding light on a new form of film viewing, virtual reality. The Sundance Institute announced that it will be partnering with Jaunt Studios to create a virtual reality residency program that will sponsor a new artist while he or she creates a virtual reality exhibit.
Sundance’s New Frontier Program has chosen Australian, Lynette Wallworth, as its first residency artist. Wallworth, who is not new on the Sundance circuit (her “Coral: Rekindling Venus” debuted in 2013 as part of the New Frontier Program), is working on a piece named “Collisions”. This virtual reality project follows the life of an elderly Aboriginal man and how the mainstream advances of today have affected his daily life.
Before the film begins, audiences will move to Salt Lake City’s Sundance Film Festival screening room and receive a pair of goggles and earphones. Although this makes for a more solitary viewing experience, those watching will have their senses heightened due to the virtual reality of the film.
According to Sundance Institute, the New Frontier exhibition, “…has provide the highest level of curation in the emerging field, incorporating fiction, non-fiction and hybrid projects to showcase transmedia storytelling, multi-media installations, performances and films.”
If you are moving to Salt Lake City, you won’t want to miss what this innovative program is going to bring to the area where Sundance Film Festival is such a big part of the city’s reputation.
